No. we were busy playing real multiplayer shooter games on the PC like Counter Strike.

Nah..

Not only were releases nearly 2yrs apart, CS didn't get popular until 2001.

Golden Eye - August 25,1997

Counter Strike - June, 19 1999

The whole 4 screen split screen crap was just ridiculous. This was long before huge TVs so your individual box was like looking at an iPad. It was just terrible and highly overrated.

How is it overrated if that was the mechanism for those times?

Like saying bayonets are overrated as a killing device because now we have machine guns to mow ppl down.

You are kidding right? Never heard of LAN parties? Much better way of gaming. Everyone gets their own screen.

Goldeneye and CS were still both out around the same time. I used it as an example of how multiplayer shooters that were actually good did things because it was the most popular around that time.

Rainbow Six was out in 98. Even long before that, you had Doom death match, Quake, and several others that all did multiplayer way better that Goldeneye.

It was overrated but I guess I can see how it was fun for all the little kiddies at the time that were stuck playing on consoles because they couldn't understand or afford PC gaming. It was a nice shiny new thing to them. To the rest of us PC gamers, we had had better for years.
