If she didn't even offer an explanation to why it's shattered should tell you something. She has obviously been using it that way for a while now. Is she irresponsible, unorganized, destructive and sloppy? Or maybe she is frugal and even though her relatives kid broke it she doesn't want to spend the money to fix it right now because she'll be due an for an upgrade in 2 months.
