He's not heartless. He just lacks wisdom. He thinks that because he is strong and a master of his Universe that those who aren't deserve their fate. It's a common view, particularly of the young. It's the conceit of those who feel they are somehow "bulletproof". If you live long enough, you go from being arrogant about people "getting what they deserve" to being grateful that you and your loved ones somehow managed not to get what you/they deserved.
At the very least, keep in mind that even if your family is airtight concerning addiction that when you have children your children inherit an entirely different set of genetic predispositions regarding addiction. Think about that stark fact with humility. You may be introducing 300 years of barely-interrupted alcoholism into the family. So proceed with humility.
