Do you know oppressed Muslim women in this country?

I went to school with a couple of Muslim and Hindu families. I know there's significant differences in the religions, but they were all doctor's families from the high social class. The kids were pretty assimilated as 2nd generation Americans, but there was a noticeable difference, as expected, in their customs.

They may not consider their customs "oppression", because it's ingrained in their ways. (I'm referring to Muslims not Hindu's btw) It's not exactly the treatment on Muslim women I'm worried about in the US anyways, it's how many US Muslims want sharia law.

I've seen polls in other places, such as Britain and France, that 50%+ of Muslims want sharia indoctrinated where they live.

I moved to America when I was 2. My mom worked a little when I was very young, and then went to full time house wife when my dad found more stable work. He didn't want her to work and wanted her to take care of my sister and me. This was definitely the product of different customs.

Fast forward to today and my parents have pushed both of us to becoming fully educated and independent.

Just curious as to what you considered "oppression" from what you saw from these families?
