I have a Prius in my household, my parents both drive them, and my FIL has one for his work commute. None of us think we are better than any other driver on the road. We just like 50 mpg in a decent sized, fairly low cost, and reliable vehicle. We also don't do 55 on the interstate, so we may not be the usually Prius buyer
Exactly. I drive a Prius for the $$$green$$$ benefits. I drive over 30,000 miles a year and went from an Expedition getting 14 miles to the gallon to a Prius getting 45 mpg 10 years ago. I have probably saved over $30,000 in that time, including the Prius' higher note in the equation. And no, I don't drive in the left lane except to pass.
