Just like in college basketball, a conference championship is now irrelevant to selection committee. It sends the wrong message when penn state is left out for Ohio st who didn't even win the big 10 east. Much like Bama in 2011 who got in over Oklahoma st and didn't even win sec west.

College football used to be all about what your team accomplished not the dreaded eyeball test! My favorite game is now unrecognizable!

Penn State had two losses...one a blowout loss. Ohio State's schedule looked more impressive to me as one of the best teams in the country. PSU didn't have the depth to compete with Alabama because they're still recovering from sanctions.

The BCS had the same 4 teams that the playoff does.

If we still had the BCS system, the results would be the same.

The only fix is to go to an 8 team playoff with each of the power 5 conference champs getting an automatic spot and then 3 at large selections

Ohio st is probably much better than Penn St despite the loss if you look at the whole season. But yes, penn st is more deserving. That's why I wish there were more teams (8) and you had conference champs as automatic entries plus a few wild cards.

8 conferences - 16 teams per. That's 128 teams, which CFB is already pretty close to.

Each division crowns a champ and each conference gets a championship game.

8 conference winners are seeded into a bracket.

Done.

It's difficult when teams can play such different schedules even within the same division of a conference. I think the better set up would be to reduce the regular season to 8 games. Then divide all teams into tiered 8 team playoff groupings. Every team will play 3 games within that grouping to determine final ranking. Based on the results of those grouping you will go to a bowl game or final 4 match up for the champion. Yes its a bit more complex but it will treat the players fairly and eliminate schedule bias. Also it eliminates the creeping additional games that have been added each season. College players shouldn't be playing 15 games.

Winning the conference championship that Penn State into the Rose Bowl, so I would hardly say it's meaningless.

I hate how everyone is on the over reaction bandwagon on this crap, this isn't the 2004 Auburn team that didn't make the final dance here! They had two loses people! How about don't lose two games and expect to get to compete for the national championship! The eyeball test says they arn't as good and it's backed up by the good ole fashion win-loss column in black and white. Conference championships do mean something...if there was debate between multiple teams with one loss and one had won the conference championship they would get in. Phuck, this shite is simple people!

Even if they want to move to an 8 team playoff, they should wait until the 4 team playoff has made the big 12 fall apart or become irrelevant enough to not warrant an automatic spot.

The CFB playoff definitely has made CFB better. All this talk about devaluating a season and making losses acceptable is retarded.

Bama was one of the 2 best teams in 2011. OSU is one of the best 4...the playoff should have 8 teams

What are you talking about? Or better yet, when are you talking about? It appears to me you are longing for a day that literally never existed. Ever.

A conference championship guarantees a team's entry into the NCAA Tournament.

That's not even the biggest problem.

The biggest problem is that this committee states that the 4 best teams are picked This committee is not capable of determining this. It's a farce. To think they know more than looking at results on the field is ridiculously incorrect.

The standard HAS to be most deserving...and then a semi-subjective committee might make sense. But, to be able to fall back on a totally subjective eye test is simply a way to manipulate the results.

Ignorant post by a person who hasn't done his homework. Ohio State has a better record and a tougher schedule than Penn State. Head-to-head and conference championships count, but not enough to overcome a better record and tougher schedule. Your post contains nothing but rhetoric and no comprehensive evidence and brings nothing to the table.

So we should only do conference champs so that we only have 5 teams to choose from at the end of the year? What if Va Tech had beaten Clemson? Should Oklahoma have jumped 5 spots up just so we could keep our precious Conference Champions sacred?

That's not true across the board.

It's just true in the case of Penn St.

Please, people were crying just a couple of years ago wanting a playoff. People want this perfect system where no one has any complaints or gripes but that system will never exist.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't winning a conference championship (in basketball) an automatic bid to the tournament?

I remember Georgia going into the SEC Tournament with 13 or so wins under their belt and ranked dead last in the East winning the SEC championship and getting a bid into the NCAA Tournament.
