Is this another win for the anti-establishment? The group that wins out of this is the Five Star Movement, I think. That group wants to leave the Euro but not the EU(I think). Renzi rose to prominence on the promise that he would reform and streamline Italian government. I think that streamlining and centralization was the primary reason this referendum failed. It did too much too quickly, I think. But this type of reform is exactly what Renzi ran on.

Leaving the eurozone but staying in the European Union could very well be a feasible plan for many of the Southern European economies. All the common currency has done is make the already dominant Northern European countries even more competitive, particularly regarding tourism, the dominant industry of many of the Southern European countries.
