Government and oil company had hundreds of meetings, tribes were invited. They wanted 10's of millions of dollars, pipeline was moved.
Most natives aren't involved in the protest, it's mainly environmentalists who are trashing the land and committing violence.

Have the dots been connected to Buffett on this one yet?
I was talking to someone about this yesterday. They are gonna have highs of 3 degrees F this week. I suspect the protests will all but end...

And possibly the protests being funded by the current company transporting the oil.

There should be some natural selection once winter sets in the Dakotas.

Army Corps of engineers did a survey and found that a pipeline would be far more ecologically sound as a transport mode - as has been proven over and over. Trucking is even more harmful, not to mention dangerous at this time of year.
Warren Buffet once again saw a threat to his railway transport businesses, so he whipped up another anti-pipeline protest. Most of the idiots you see on TV really are environmentalists, but the core consists of those paid by Buffet's interests. This is the case with almost every one of these situations.
The protestors are squatting on private land that the owner wants them off of, so kicking them out is well within the right of the authorities.
Whether the pipeline is on "sacred land" is very hard to determine, as anyone can say that something is sacred land without a clearly defined parameter. As stated, sacred or not, this particular tract is private property, so it's moot.
So:
A more ecologically sound mode of transport + Warren Buffet + stupid people + crunchy nativist drum circle philosophies = this huge pile of bullshite.
ETA: Here's a very good breakdown.

How far below the water table will the pipeline be?
*Not that it matters, as the source water for the area is being moved 70 miles away from the pipeline*...but anyway, how far below the water table will the pipeline be?

There is already a pipeline running through there and liberals are being shitheads. Again

I think almost all of the pipeline is complete except for this small portion. We were north central South Dakota pheasant hunting a couple of weeks ago and all the locals we talked with were pissed about the protest and supported the pipeline

I haven't really looked at the specs, yet. My work has been more east tx and ft collins as of late but i know thats what the people are afraid of. I actually dont think it matters so much. Precautions will be taken. Now the ideological concerns are arguable, but that's a larger conversation

Good rundown. Just what I was looking for. Thanks.

Well, in your expert opinion, based on past experience, how deep would it have to be--in relation to the water table-- to be safe? How close to be dangerous?
