This is an absolutely terrible story, and while the internet has created many great things, it's also created new opportunities to harass and bully people in more unavoidable ways. I think it's also made suicide a more salient option for people.

Optimistically though, schools and communities are starting to effectively address these issues. So hopefully the silver-lining (if you can call it that) is that with the internet, the more people become aware of these things, the more they will address the problems proactively.
