I would think there are a lot of cool places around Hot Springs, AR. If you are coming to Texas and don't want to drive all the way to Big Bend or Palo Duro Canyon, consider Enchanted Rock State Park. It is about 1.5 hours west of Austin.
Also, if going out to West Texas the Guadalupe Mountains Natuonal Park is a good alternative to Big Bend.
I also think Toledo Bend is a nice lake with some good camping areas. (A lot closer for you)
