The more expensive ones give you a stronger laser. Lets you measure things farther away on less reflective surfaces. The cheap "500-600" yard models will have a difficult time at yardages past 250-300 yards unless you are shooting a reflective hard surface. I've measured out to 400 yards on a human sized target before with my cheap Hal XRT6 I got a Academy for $80ish.
