I played on one of those progression servers for a little while but it isn't quite the same because they don't have the original data when EQ was launched. So classes like mages are completely op where their pet is a better tank then a full geared warrior. The problem with most newer MMO's is they want to rush everyone to the endgame so leveling up feels like more of a hassle than any fun. I have zero confidence in daybreak saving the franchise where their main accomplishment is h1z1.

It's only for the first expansion or two, and their newest progression servers only allow 1 account to be active per computer to cut back on the people botting with 2 and 3 groups of mages gibbing raid bosses. I even think on the newest one they nerfed mage pets.

I'm not saying they'll save the franchise, but that there is still the ability to get some of that nostalgia back. I played for a few months and had a blast.
