I worry that Herman is the hot coach because of his talented QB. Without the QB, we may not notice him. Cam won it all for Auburn, where have they been since.
His QB at Texas St went from nobody before him, to 5th in the FCS version of the heisman with him. They went to their first ever playoffs
In his second year at Rice his QB had over 4800 total yards and 57 TDs, RIce won 10 games (first time since 1949).
In his 3 years at Iowa St his QB finished second in school history in passing and total offense. In his time there his 2009 season is the only time they have had a winning record the past 11 years.
Ohio State
Braxton Miller was Big Ten POY 2 years in a row with Herman. Miller's backup Guyton, when Miller was injured for parts of his final year, put up 750 pass yards, 330 rush yards, and 19 TDs. He completed damn near 69% of his passes, but only attempted 27 passes in his entire career beforehand. Miller had 3150 total yards and 36 TDs that same year. His 2 QBs that year combined for 4230 yards and 55 TDs.
His 2 DIFFERENT QBs the very next year, one being a redshirt freshman the other a guy that never really threw a pass before, put up 4930 yards and 53 TDs. His QB he recruited from Texas, JT Barrett, (who missed his senior year of HS with an injury) won Big Ten POY, and would have won the heisman had he not gotten injured before the Big Ten championship game.
The next year after he left OSU for Houston HC, those same 2 QBs under Urban put up 3325 total yards and 32 TDs. Even over a full 15 games it is still way behind what Herman did (3836 yards, 37 TDs).
The man is an offensive mastermind and can make chicken salad out of chicken shite. Doesn't really matter the QB, as long as he can run decent. That's what LSU needs with all these dual threats and option and spread offenses in Louisiana and Texas high schools.
