BB created an Android runtime player. Several developers created apps that allowed you to download apps from the Google play store.
However, if a particular app required Google Play Services, such as HBO to GO or Google Maps, you were screwed. Google is also fixing it to where more and more apps must require Google Play Services. One reason BB went full Android.
Windows faces a similar problem if it is going that route.
The other problem with porting Android apps to Windows is that the ported apps will never run as smoothly as the native apps.
