Ok. I'm kinda new to ARs. Not rifles or reloading. Ammo obscurity and price are relatively redundant as I'm gonna reload whatever I go with. Also don't want to build an ar10 and wouldn't anything in the 308 case family require an AR10 platform? That's what I'm understanding. Again, gonna be for a kid and want to avoid the extra weight

I built a 16" 6.5 Grendel to use under 300 yards on deer and hogs. After reading about all my options I went with Grendel in the end because of availability of cheap steel case plinking ammo for less than $0.30/rd. I've seen several people state chronograph numbers of ~2450-2530fps out of a 16" barrel for the factory 123gr Hornady SST. You can get another 200fps out of a 24" barrel but I would rather have the short carbine setup over the extra 200fps. Wolf ammo comes out of the barrel like 6.5mm buckshot (2-3MOA with an occasional flier outside of that). My first 3 shots of Hornady SST made a cloverleaf on the target.

You are correct. A 308, or any of it's derivatives, will require an AR-10 platform, NOT the AR-15 platform you've specified you wanted to use.
