I think it's exactly what the guy said earlier, if everyone got off easier by self-reporting, would the problem be fixed?
It sets an example. Doesn't matter if you self-report or not, same punishment. It really is a shitty situation, but if they let everyone off with a slap on the wrist just because they self-reported, does the problem get fixed? Do you prevent people from committing the same crime?
Now, was a felony charge warranted? Being that he self-reported, that does seem rough. Could have easily reduced that to a misdemeanor since he did report.
