That's basically what we're thinking of doing. Possibly stopping in Asheville for the split. All depends on what everyone feels like doing.

If you do decide to drive, time it to avoid getting on the beltway at rush hour. That could easily add 2 hours to your drive.

If you fly, fly into Reagan. It typically has cheaper fares in my experience and it has a metro stop which provides easy access to the city. Dulles will require a bus transfer or Uber to get to the metro.
