High school GPAs are close to meaningless if used to prove someone's intelligence.
You could say the same for standardized testing as well, especially if you don't test well.
Either way, he was supposedly (per the article) one of the top kids in his class. And Stanford was definitely recruiting him and they're not going to bother with a kid who isn't going to come close to qualifying IMO. So I don't think he's dumb as a box of rocks. I've definitely met some "book smart" kids in my time working in education that did some really dumb shite outside of the classroom.

When Winston was 10, he learned what a podiatrist was. He'd been in the car on trips to the foot doctor with his family. He saw how diabetes affected their feet. He wanted to grow up not to be Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but to fix feet. Then he lived it. Winston carries a 4.0 grade-point average and is one of the top students in his class. He'll major in biology in college on the path to that medical degree.

"There were three college coaches there that came to see me play," Winston said. "One coach from Stanford came all the way from California. I regret that ever happened because I was embarrassed that night by letting my team down and with those coaches there to see that."
