Manila would most definitely not be my choice, it rots after very few wet dry cycles and I would hate the rope to part whilst I was pulling myself up a hill.

As to size, the bigger the better in this application, less stress on the hands, tie it to a tree on the top with a 1/2 hitch, pull to next anchor point and tie another half hitch, repeat as necessary.
