Great tips, thanks. As far as the creature comforts -

1. Looks like my phone won't work and I should probably buy a pre paid SIM card but it's going to give me a new phone # so it's not like I can receive calls on my USA phone #, so it would really only be for emergencies, I guess. I'm wondering then if I really even need one..
2. We will definitely visit some of the public geothermal pools in the area in addition to the Blue Lagoon. These will be great activities to relax and trade off kid's activities vs. what I want to do. Do I want to bring slippers/towels/robes with me and waste luggage space (airline charges for luggage) OR rent/buy it there?
3. I read that pretty much everywhere takes Visa so there may not be a need to even change for Krona but we are going to rent a car and self drive the Golden Circle. If we do that I'm sure we'll make stops at smaller stores/stands along the way. Do you think they would take CC as well or should I exchange a few hundred USD into ISK just in case? Heck, at the rate the USD is falling (I'm looking at some charts as I type) I might just do this now to hedge my bets...

Thanks in advance and I appreciate your last response. Great information and I'm really getting excited for this visit.

1. I used a Vodafone SIM and just bought it at the airport duty free. Works pretty much everywhere. We used it a lot as we needed it for directions via Google maps. Google maps was spot on everywhere by the way. Never led us anywhere but where we needed to go.

2. Don't bother taking robes, slippers etc. if you do the right package (I think we did the higher end one, can't remember the name). The one we did included all of this. Go in your own clothes, change at your locker they give you into robe/sandals. You can also go to lunch at Lava in robe/sandals.

3. I used my Amex pretty much everywhere. It worked better than cash because they don't have any foreign transaction fees. It seemed everywhere took credit cards, even the most remote places we went. Gift shops at waterfalls, small shops in town, bars, cafes etc. I would bring a small amount of cash of course just in case but doubt you will use much. Many places take Icelandic Krona, Euros, and some also USD.

I use Sprint and had an international plan that was free data and $0.20 calls. Deal Deal Deal - cant help you on anything else.

No they give you towels everywhere, but maybe flip flops. Consider Secret Lagoon in Fludir, there is a geyser going off behind you which is pretty cool. Bring nothing but a bathing suit or maybe flips

I brought some Krona but really didn't need to. Maybe the occasional craft store. $100 or $200 is plenty. Gas can be a challenge in some places in terms of the fact our CCs don't have PINs. You may have to go in and buy a gift card (and a hotdog - the national fast food!). But with money, by the end of my week I was purposely trying to spend the cash as I had not used any of it yet.

One thing I would add - very expensive. I don't mean like they say Paris or other Europe, I mean really expensive. Just get used to it. Only a handful of grocery stores. They have hotdogs and such as low end that is normal ($4-5) but there is little middle ground - it skyrockets up. Had several $200 USD dinners with no alcohol and not top end restaurants - just be cognizant.
