This is how I see it...
Put your average baseball player on the basketball court or football field, they will compete. Might not be good but the average player is athletic enough to "compete" in all phases of those sports.
Put the average basketball/football player on the baseball field, they will not be competitive in all phases of the sport - hitting, fielding, throwing, running 90 feet
Perhaps it's more of a "talent" thing rather than "athleticism" though

How about this: have pro basketball and baseball players play a game of football. It would be an absolute beatdown.
