I always hunted within shouting distance to my ol man until I was old enough to drive a vehicle down the camp road (14 or so). He usually dropped me off within eyesight of the stand or I hunted the next stand past him. When we hunt together we still pretty much do the same thing just a little more cautious about the wind direction now though.
Bears were never a problem but we did have hogs. Give him a bright arse flashlight and a whistle, then hunt relatively close.
