Only because of technology. It'd be really hard to argue that the gents from 1940's didn't have more grit and know how than the modern day American male population, with few exceptions. They were tougher because they grew up with far less, but were taught morals and principle.

The question posed was when were we at our peak, using other countries as a baseline. You currently have all of human knowledge in your hand. That alone makes right now tGOAT living on this planet. I don't understand how you can't account for tech, which is part of our progression.
ETA: Also, we are bigger, stronger, an faster than any point of human evolution. We would physically beat the frick out of any nation before is. The average male height was like 5'4" in the 1800s.
