The Navy isn't the first to something like this.
This is like the Army changing from calling cooks a food service specialist to calling them culinary specialist. The introduction of the ACU had officers remove their branch affiliation. Now unless you know them, you don't know if you are talking to an Infantry, Engineer, or an MP officer.
