Skip was quite competent as an AD. Les was doing good at the time, and there was a contract in force between the university and Les. It would have been a major public relations nightmare, not to mention potential legal, to terminate Les at the time just because Nick wanted to come back. You also need to keep in mind, that the powers that be were beginning to get annoyed with some of Nick's behavior, as well as him being shopped at the end of every season. Saban had no buy out if he decided to leave. He doesn't have one at Alabama either. The annual crisis was beginning to be a source of irritation for the administration. There were those who wanted Saban back, but there were also those with who some bridges had been burned beyond repair.
