He's a stand up guy. He could have trashed a lot of people in this scenario, or showed some bitterness. He loves LSU and I think he knew that getting fired was probably better for LSU than him staying and dragging it down further. That takes a truly selfless man to do.

Im sorry, but a truly selfless man, knowing what you've just stipulated, wouldn't have forced the university to fire him. He'd have stepped down.
