Kind of surprised they are teaching religion in a public school in Germany.

IIRC Germany has a state religion. Depending on the area, it's either the Lutheran or Roman Catholic Church.
ETA: I looked it up, and apparently not any more, but religions with a sufficient number of followers are entitled to certain privileges, one of which is instruction in public schools.
