We've been there many times.

Boston certainly is an option, but we fly into Bangor and rent a car. Easy (1 hour?) drive.

I would recommend staying in Bar Harbor. Easy to walk to restaurants, bars, etc.
Plenty of B and B's to choose from. Bar Harbor Inn is an old hotel w great location on the point.

Rent bikes and ride the carriage paths. Go to Jordan Pond House and have popovers on the back lawn. Drive up to Cadillac Mountain. Breakfast at Cafe This Way. Lots of other stuff to do as well.

This is what you want to be doing. We stayed in Southwest Harbor when we went but its all relatively the same if you are renting a vehicle. Very easy to bike around and the Hiking is excellent. You will see a lot of lobster and blueberry related items on the menus. Acadia in the summer is a great place to be.
