Each one has their strength. The E39 5-series I drove was an absolute beast on the highway. It would get up to speed and just sink right into the road to haul arse. I didn't really enjoy it in lower gears. My 3 series have been awesome city cars and also curvy country road cars. If I commuted a long way, then I'd go 5 all the way, but I live in the city and my 3 is perfect for that.
I'd will add that BMWs are probably the worst cars to own in New Orleans. They have rough suspensions to begin with, and two years on those roads just destroyed my car. New Orleans isn't kind to any car, but especially a bmw.
