Loud rattle-screech, sounds what I think a bad bearing would sound like. Whatever it is, definitly not normal. But when the fan wasn't running, before I pushed the blades, and that took almost zero effort, the compressor was pretty quiet... just a faint hum.

could also be broken fan blades. I've seen that before. Check for cracks near the center hub.
