Especially with a debit card. You should NOT be given the option of PIN vs signing. It should always be PIN only. Same for credit cards. Sorry folks, but America is way behind not only Europe, but the entire world on this one.

I'm pretty sure European banks do not provide credit card fraud protection to consumers like US banks do. Disputed charges etc etc. The rationale is that if someone else got your card and pin, it's your fault.

With the switch to chip in the US, the liability shifted to retailers if they did not have the ability to accept a chipped card and it remains with banks if they didn't provide chipped cards. Consumers still have the protection.

So our technology may not be great, but the consumer protection is still better.

Anyway the whole thing is a farce because fraudsters gonna fraud and chips don't do jack for online transactions.
