I think this is the best advice on this particular choice. The caveat being, they're so close that if you're already prone to liking Ruger (like me), then you go that way. Ditto for S&W.
At the end of the day, the Ruger probably has a slightly better barrel. I think both come with Magpul BUIS. It was more clearly Ruger's game to win when the original Sport came with no dust cover and no forward assist. Now, it's a "pick the one you like, they're too close to objectively distance themselves from each other."
