Correct. I always thank someone for holding a door open and I try to be alert to hold the door open for others. I have waited for a women to come from a good 20 feet to let her go in store while I held door. It's just a common courtesy. However it's not that way in the northern states. In Michigan people will get offended by a "how ya doing" if you don't know them.

I noticed that when I was in Iowa, so I used to make it a point to tell people hello in stores just to see the confusion.
