He obviously means if everything is equal, so he would rather take a higher salary compared to it being put into a benefit. Given that, it depends on taxes.

But for the most part I would agree, I'd rather be paid the money and get to decide what I do with it rather than figure out what the "company" will do with it. I am almost always better off handling my own money.
