Moles are very territorial, and they rotate tunnels the way farmers rotate crops. They clear out one yard of bugs, then move on to the next.
The thing is... once their tunnels become part of the "network" of tunnels, they are always on the network. Some mole will work your yard into their rotation when it's available.
So that's why you see them go away and come back, then come back again, and again, and again.
Moles are remarkable survivors. I would recommend dealing with them one of two ways. Traps, or using a rat terrier to go after them when they surface at night.
All moles crawl to the surface at night, because that's where the worms are. Get you a rat terrier (borrow one if you don't want to keep him) with mental problems, and turn him loose at night. He will have a field day.
Going after a mole while he's underground is pointless. You get them on the surface or transitioning to the surface with traps.
