I'm pretty much retired and keep the same hours as Bill Gates. Only a billionaire, a bum or a retiree can sleep until 7 am and get away with it.
I used to get up at 5:45 and was in my car headed to work before 7:00. Leaving that early, I could be in my office by 7:20-7:30. I made coffee and ate breakfast when I got to the office. Pretty much had a 60 person office to myself until about 7:50. I could check my messages and email while I ate. I tried to do things like reports or printing before others got there.
I stayed up until midnight back then too, so I wasn't even getting six hours. I was one of those boring people that worked while they went to college. It took me six years to get a bachelor's degree, because I had a couple of good construction jobs that I didn't want to leave until I'd cleared a set amount. After I graduated I worked two jobs for over 20 years. The second one didn't pay well, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed my "real" too actually.

In architecture, you typically spend your first portion of the day (8-12) either on-site going through check throughs or client consultations. Your (1-4) is also spent on client consultations or on-site. I should add that there is no such thing as only a few client consultations. We'd average around 7 to nail down the final product.
That said, the majority of our "work" began post 9-5 hours.
