I think Ayer is just too street level, which works amazingly for his other films. The Joker just isnt that, and actually is the polar opposite of that. Nolan really nailed that part about the Joker hating organized crime and finding it so boring. He would never take part in it and run it.

To me it felt like they really wanted to use Harley (which I think they did justice), so they felt like they HAD to use the Joker and tried to fit that character into Ayer's tool box, which just didnt mesh.

That Joker is more Black Mask than anything.
