The guys who will likely still want to swim for the US in Tokyo probably didn't want to get in trouble. I'd imagine something like that could result in suspension by their national swimming federation.
ETA: Rio government officials still fricked up in how they handled it. Pulling swimmers of planes and revoking passports for this is ridiculous. It easily could've been handled between the Embassy there and lawyers.

I'd say fabricating a story like this w/ international news and slandering rio's reputation for a false incident shouldn't go over very well.

Making up a bullshite, serious story that becomes a worldwide headline? I say ship Locthe back to Brazil and let all the swimmers spend a month or two in a Brazilian prison.
