In general, fans don't remember someone who only coached three years unless he was really bad.

I was a student at LSU during this time. Archer was getting a lot of play in the media as a great young coach. This was before 24-7 coverage so maybe the reporting was biased. It all felt good, we commoners just knew that Bill had saved our program after the Rein tragedy, installed the next great young coach and then he had gone home to retire. None of that held true.

The SEC emerged in the 90's as the dominant conference and our program floundered while the schools in the East dominated. The gumps got one under a short-timer in 92 but Saban had everything to do with elevating our program before he left. It was not Bill's fault it took so long and he sure as heck had no idea that Spurrier's offense would be revolutionary.
