I listen to different bands for different reasons.

However, at the end of the day, it's the sound that initially draws me in. There are plenty of great folk, singer/songwriter, and indie artists I will never bother to listen to at length because, frankly, they just don't sound good to me. Bob Dylan is one of the few artists whose voice is universally criticized that I overlook, and usually enjoy, just to hear his words.

There have been a number of bands that I have attempted to endure because the instrumentations were enjoyable and the lyrics possessed artistic meaning. But if the vocalist just doesn't do it for me then I'm not going to subject myself to listening to something I don't fully enjoy.

I don't necessarily need a dulcet or operatic voice to turn me on to something. I just prefer that it be either unique or remotely melodic (with the exception being some extreme metal vocalists I enjoy).

It's like having sex with a partner who is good an bed and enthusiastic, but isn't pleasant to look at. Sure, there are some appealing characteristics to this lover, but I would still prefer a slight degree of superficial attraction to pull me in.
