Reminds of the stories of the German POWs in Kansas in WWII who essentially became semi-free citizens of the town instead of just being behind bars all the time. They were even offered classes at the U of Kansas.

Many of them immigrated here after the war because of the great treatment they received as POW's. Some had illegitimate children with American women as POW's.

I think there is a person in Roberts Cove, LA who's father was a German POW.
