Did you read the article? He usually carries a 44 Mag but they're were only males in the area who aren't as aggressive as females with cubs. They startled this one.

I read the article and it still doesn't make sense. Just because sows don't frequent the area doesn't mean there's zero possibly. I would think you'd always want to be prepared for the absolute worst.
