With interest rates on savings at zero why have a lot of cash?

Around 55% in my trading account as of yesterday. I exited several positions over the past week and I haven't selected any new longs, shorts or option plays yet.

I seldom fall below 10% in my trading account (why use margin if you don't have to?) or 20% or so in my retirement accounts. I'd say that the percentage of cash in my retirement accounts is around 30% now. Unless I can see that the risk/reward is in my favor, I'm content to sit on cash or shorter term instruments. Market up or down, a dollar will still be a dollar. But if you just jump in because that's what the herd is doing, that dollar might end up being .75 or whatever.

Also remember that there are different age groups here. I can see my retirement date from where I'm sitting. Some of the posters here have 30+ years to go. And some of us invest and trade, while others primarily invest. Those are two very different strategies, that require different cash management strategies
