Let's face it, many of these coaches that have come back to college have found out that controlling college kids is easier than controlling full grown adults that make as much if not more money than they do. Also, by in large, the media in the larger markets are more harsh than college towns.

Also, if you aren't winning in the pros, you get much more criticism overall. In short, if Petrino had a 9-4 record and a decent QB right now, he would still be in Atlanta.
