If it is your first AR buy a S&W MP sport 2.
You will get it for less than 500 if you look. And it is damn solid out of the box. The magpul iron front and rear make it target ready to plink and/or hunt to get you used to the platform and you'll have plenty left over from your mentioned budget for a shite ton of brass to throw and a more than decent red-dot for when you're ready to upgrade from the iron sights included.
Seeiously you can't go wrong with the sport 2, or even the ruger ar556
Similar price point and they both hum out the box

I think it costs right at $1k. Prices changed recently though so I could be wrong.

I'd go in a bit of a different direction from most for your first. Build one, and build it cheap. Cheap, not shite. I'd be happy to give you some suggestions for some quality budget parts. Then, shoot the hell out of it. You'll learn the weapon, have fun doing it, and at a low cost. As you do that, you'll learn more about what you want out of your next build (there will be more). That's when you want to start spending. When you're done, you still have a "beater" rifle you can throw in your truck. If you decide it's not for you (you won't), you probably won't lose anything but the time you put into it when you sell.

Also, don't shy away from building one if that's what you want to do. Building is easy if you can follow directions. There are plenty of resources for doing this. My sister built one when she was 15. You'll be fine.

That is the forged gun, the MLR 15 that you linked. The Mk1 is a billet gun. My friend actually just bought an MLR 15 recently.

I'm in the midst of building my first one...........with no prior knowledge of these rifles, I've never even shot an AR.

It's been easy so far and I don't even have a vice. I am going to take it by the gun shop where I bought some of the parts and have them tighten the castle nut and barrel nut and look over the rifle to make sure I have everything in order.

I've enjoyed the build so far and already want to build another one.

Looks like a nice setup if you're ok with a blem lower. I was somewhat in the same shoes as you but went with the setup I spoke about and spent rite at 1K. Never regreted it. S&W are mil spec weapons chrome lined barrels. Solid choice. Just my opinion.

If you're just wanting something to dick around with, look at the S&W m&p sport II and an aimpoint for right at 1000.

You'll get a good bit more for your money if you buy a used low round count rifle. If you're going to shoot the shite out of it, who cares if it has a few hundred rounds through it?
