I keep reading "if only the priest were allowed to marry they wouldn't do this" and it drives me insane. These people are pedophiles that prey on children, it is that simple. Pedophiles know at a young age that they have an attraction to young children, those that are academically inclined go to college and become teachers and coaches, those without the book smarts get jobs as janitors at schools. Some do get married and live outwardly normal lives, they hide in plain site while getting access to children by being scout leaders and coaches. They design their careers and lives to be in contact with children. The priesthood was almost designed to be a haven for pedophiles, access to children, power and influence over their lives, and until recent history the comfort that no one would every suspect them of such a thing, and probably not believe the accuser if they were. Most of what I have written here is just repeating what a detective that does child protective services work told me. I do agree with the poster that said prohibiting priests from marrying reduces the selection pool down to those that are pedophiles or homosexuals.
