3' of 250 lb leader about 20" from hook use a crimp then a bead then sinkers then another bead and a heavy duty swivel.
I like as much weight as I can get so the bait goes where I want it but where the current takes it. This is all connected to 80 lb braid.
This is my exact setup also. I've had people tell me it was overkill with the leader but I don't like losing any fish.

With that heavy duty leader you don't have to gaff or net fish you just lift them over the side even if they are big it makes it MUCH easier IMO.
The other thing I think is important in heavy current is braid for your terminal line. It doesn't want to float like mono and as a result sinks quicker and keeps you out of the rig in strong current. Same reason I like a LOT of weight.
