David Lean.

Gave us:

Great Expectations (1946)
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Lawrence of Arabia
Doctor Zhivago (1965)
Ryan's Daughter
A Passage to India

What are some others that come to your mind?

David Lean is a legend...he's one of the most well known and successful Directors ever, most young people have probably never seen his movies though, shame.

I went “What you all watching, hoes?” They said “The Legend of Bagger Vance.” I was like “Get that bull off the TV, I brought a couple of DVDs over.” She said “What’d you bring?” “Doctor Zhivago, A Brief Encounter, and A Bridge Over The River Kwai; A lean night.”

John Sturges, Sidney Lumet are two of my favorite directors, but they have for sure been heard of.

Alejandro Jodorowsky:

El Topo
The Holy Mountain
Santa Sangre
The Dance of Reality

He has a cult following but most have not heard of him or his movies. The Dance of Reality (2013) was his first movie in 23 years, I think its one of the best movies of the 2000s.
