Offensive driven. Playing lock down defense that doesn't even allow your guy to take a shot on you is actually penalized. Because you have less of a chance for a steal or block. If a guy posts Ryno up 20 times, scores 19 buckets and gets blocked once, PER looks at that more favorably than never even trying to challenge a guy because he's such a great defender. Same problem exists with OFF and DEF rating.

Real Plus Minus measures the players effect on a court. The deterrent effect is the most important for defenders. Making them shoot lower percentage shots even though you won't collect any stats for it.
