There have been a number of films that were musically-themed that did an excellent job - Good Morning Vietnam , Almost Famous, to name a couple (and, to credit them Barry Levinson, with his variety television experience, and Cameron Crowe, his first career was as a rock journalist, typically did great work with popular music in their films).
But, among his gifts, Marty has a connection to musicians for whom he also made films, The Rolling Stones (Jagger, especially) and The Band, just to name 2. So, for a big budget filmmaker, Marty is way up there in this regard.
